The Wild Dolphin Project (WDP) was founded by Dr. Denise Herzing in 1985 after identifying the need for pristine underwater data collection to research dolphins. It is engaged in a long-term scientific study of a specific pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) that live 56 miles off the southeast coast of Florida, the Bahamian waters.
Project objectives of this long-term, non-invasive field research are to gather information on the natural history of this pod including behaviors, social structure, communication and habitat; and to report what we have learned to the scientific community and the general public.
With the environment in such a state of volatility, it is pertinent to advocate on behalf of those whose lives depend on human action. This research is critical to truly understand the complexity of dolphin intelligence, social cognition and the lives of dolphins in the wild.
