Youth Service America

Youth Service America (YSA) improves communities by increasing the number and the diversity of young people, ages 5-25, serving in substantive roles. YSA envisions a global culture of engaged children and youth committed to a lifetime of service, learning, leadership, and achievement.

Founded in 1986, YSA is an international nonprofit resource center that partners with thousands of organizations in more than 100 countries to expand the impact of the youth service movement with families, communities, schools, corporations, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, the media, and governments.

Through this network, we work to increase the quality and quantity of service opportunities and to make service and service-learning the common expectation and common experience of all young people. The impact of YSA’s work through service and service-learning is measured in student achievement, workplace readiness, and healthier communities. For more information, visit

Key programs & initiatives
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world. Each year in April, millions of young people across the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world participate in and lead service projects, working with their families, schools, community organizations, faith-based communities, and businesses, to improve their communities.

The Semester of Service encourages students, ages 5-25, to develop a semester-long service-learning project that launches on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in January and culminates on Global Youth Service Day in April. During the Semester of Service, young people tackle large, strategic problems facing the world, linking their service projects to academic curriculum.

Global Youth Service Grants support and motivate youth, teachers, service-learning coordinators, and organizations that engage youth in service and service-learning on Global Youth Service Day, Semester of Service, and throughout the year. Applicants and grantees also gain access to resources and technical assistance that guide them to plan and implement successful projects.
